(A) Aim:
- to study the patterns of
mangrove organisms
(B) Materials:
- 1 piece of 30m tape measure
- 6 pieces of metre rulers
- 3 pieces of strings
- 9 pieces of common species
identification sheet provided in the workshop
- notes to record the data
(C) Procedure
1. We were grouped into
single team, working in pairs, to conduct the transect surveys.
All of us had a species identification sheet
and notes.
2. The tape measure would be run to form a
transect from the landward to the seaward
region of the mangroves.
3. The mangrove species were identified at
each 2 meter interval along the transect.
4. The maximum height of the mangrove trees
were measured by using the meter ruler
provided.
5. The data of the mangrove species and the
maximum height of the mangrove trees were
recorded in the table on the data sheet.
6. The animal species were
searched and recorded the places these are found at each 2
meter interval, within approximately
a 1 m diameter circle around the mangrove tree.
7. The identification sheet was
used to help identify the animals.
8. The data of the animals species were record in the other table on the data
sheet.
9. The profile of the study
area was measured by using 2 pieces of meter rulers and a
string. The rulers were placed at the
right angles to the substratum at each 2 m
intervals. A string was held horizontally
between the 2 pieces of meter rulers and
measured the height difference between
the 2 rulers.
10. The data of the height difference
between the 2 rulers were recorded on the data
sheet.
